It is a Southern tradition to eat black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day to bring good luck for the coming year. This year, I decided to make this Black-Eyed Pea Hummus. It’s a delicious recipe that is satisfying and packed with tons of plant-based protein.

There’s always some type of hummus in our fridge. Whether it’s the classic hummus, or a flavored one, I always make sure that there’s at least one in the fridge.

What is Hummus?

Hummus is a dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. (I personally leave out the tahini, when making my own. Mainly because I find it to be an unnecessary ingredient and it’s expensive). Hummus is popular in the Middle East and in Middle Eastern cuisine around the globe.

Some of my FAVORITE Hummus additions:

  • Jalapenos
  • Roasted Red Bell Peppers
  • Pesto
  • Chipotle Peppers

To create this easy dip, simply combine the following ingredients in a food processor:

  • 1 15oz can black-eyed peas (drained)
  • 1 15oz can garbanzo beans (drained)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • salt & pepper to taste

Blend until you have a smooth texture. If you would like the consistency to the thinner, feel free to add more olive oil.
